The Boys & Girls Club, Helping America’s Youth

Based in Fortuna, California, heavy civil contractor and construction materials provider Mercer Fraser Co. serves Humboldt County and beyond. With a strong community presence, Mercer Fraser Co. affiliates with charitable organizations such as The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Redwoods.

Serving children ages 6-18, The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Redwoods is a development program that offers a safe place for children to learn, play, and develop leadership skills. Among many other goals, the nonprofit aims to teach its youth four senses: a sense of competence, a sense of usefulness, a sense of belonging, and a sense of power or influence.

The organization focuses on five core areas of development: sports, fitness, and social recreation; character and leadership development; health and life skills; the arts; and education and career. The organization teaches these areas in the hopes that the youth it serves will engage in daily activities that will help them in a variety of ways, from homework help to developing leadership skills and a positive self-image, characteristics that are important for America’s youth to develop.

An Overview of the Caltrans Excellence in Partnering Award

Based in Humboldt County, Mercer Fraser Co is one of the oldest construction companies in California. In 2020, the company celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding in the city of Eureka. Mercer Fraser Co performs a wide range of civil construction projects and has earned numerous accolades, including the Caltrans Excellence in Partnering Awards.

Headquartered in Sacramento, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), has given its Excellence in Partnering Awards since 2000 to partners that have completed contracts while optimally utilizing the principles of partnering. The annual statewide awards provide a chance to honor stakeholders and celebrate success and knowledge sharing.

Prospective recipients must meet both objective and subjective criteria to be eligible for the award. A jury comprised of Caltrans construction managers and experienced industry executives evaluates the applications. They judge companies based on innovation, conflict resolution, and adherence to the principles of partnering. There are five different levels of recognition, ranging from nominee to best in class.
